Valgarður Egilsson was born in Iceland in 1940. He is a physician and has worked for many years in the field og cancer research; he is also a poet and a playwright. Waiting for the South Wind is his first novel. This story takes place in mid-twentieth century Iceland, in cultural surroundings rather differnt to any comparable Western country. Life was hard, sometimes working with the elements, somtimes struggling against them. It tells of the successes and failures, the joys and the sorrows of farm people, equally at ease rounding up their livestock as they were discussing the authorship of the Bible or the Iclandic Sagas. This was his kindergarten, it was forty square miles of landscape. The kindergarten was open twenty four hours a day and a thousand years back in time; ahead was the future as unforeseeable as always.-
