On average, volcanic eruptions occur in Iceland
every four to five years. The most active
eruption sites since settlement of Iceland in AD
871 have been Hekla (18 eruptions) and the
subglacial volcanos, Katla (more than 20)
Grímsvötn (around 7 per century). The three
typical stratovolcanoes in
Iceland-Snæfellsjökull, Öræfajökull and
Eyjafjallajökull- have been much less active.
